Wheel Aligment

(Rear & Front Toe Checked; Front Only Adjustments)

Are you experiencing uneven tyre wear? Does your car pull slightly to one side or the other, is your steering wheel not straight even when you are? If any of the above things are true you may need your wheel aligment checking.

What is wheel alignment?

Wheel alignment also sometimes known as "tracking" refers to the process of checking the angles for each wheel in different to make sure they are still within manufacturer specification. The three angles commonly checked are Camber, Castor and Toe. Of these Toe is the one that usually falls out of specification the most often.

Here at Rhino Tyres we often front and rear toe checks, and front adjustment as standard. We may be able to adjust rear toe in vehicles where this does not affect camber.

Do I need wheel aligment?

A good way to see if you might need aligment is to check if your steering wheel remains in the straight ahead 12 o'clock position while travelling straight. To do this you will need to find a straight section of road with little camber and slowly drive forward; if you find yourself having to turn the wheel in order to keep going straight then your front toe might need adjustment and you should book an aligment to check.

Another way to check is to have a look at your tyres, and look at the wear pattern developing. Excessive wear on either the or outer edge could be a symptom of either incorrect toe or camber.

Toe
Toe is the most commonly checked parameter during wheel aligment as it is the one which most often needs adjustment. All cars can have their front toe adjusted, however the rear toe is only adjustable on some cars. Incorrect toe presents as increased wear either on the inner or outer edges of your tyres. Incorrect toe can also result in your steering wheel pulling to one side or another.

Camber
Camber refers to the angle of lean of a wheel as seen in the image to the left. Some cars have a lot of camber, others not so much. Either way camber is another very important aspect of wheel aligment and should be checked occasionally. Incorrect camber can cause excessive outer or inner edge wear especially on wide tyres and can drastically decrease tyre lifespan.
