Wheel Balancing

Vibration at speed?

Wheel balance is important for reducing unwanted vibration and tyre wear and poor wheel balance is especially noticeable at increased speeds.

Why Wheel Balance is important.

If you feel vibration and this is especially noticeable at higher speeds, then the first port of call should be to check your wheel balance. When tyres are fitted, the tyre and wheel assembly has to be balanced to correct for any uneven distribution in mass across the assembly.

To do this we use a piece of equipment called a wheel balancer, this device spins the wheel and tyre assembly and determines the correct location to apply various weights to bring the wheel assembly back into balance.

Static or Dynamic Balancing?

Static balancing is the simplest method of balancing a wheel. In fact static balancing is easily done without any equipment at all. Imagine spinning a wheel on an axle, the wheel will naturally lie such that the heaviest part of the assembly is at the bottom. Weights are then added opposite to counteract this imbalance.

Dynamic balancing requires the wheel assembly be spun up and results in a more thorough and complete balance of the wheel assembly. We only perform dynamic balancing on all modern tyres.

Balance Weights

Depending on the wheel, we use one or more of the following types of balance weights.

Alloy Clip-On Weights
Alloy clip-on weights are similar to those used on steel wheels, but designed to fit over the thicker rim of alloys. Usually only on inside of the wheel.
Steel Clip-On Weights
Steel clip-on weights are the most common type of balance weight, used only on steel wheels. Easily removed, clips over rim.
Steel Clip-On Weights
Stick-on weights are low profile weights with a self adhesive backing. Commonly used on alloys and often providing discreet option as hidden from view,
